Halloween

I grew up in Germany and we did not celebrate Halloween so this was a new custom I had to learn about. For my family it has turned into a tradition to go to the scary corn maze and pick our pumpkins together.  Then, about 2 days before Halloween, we carve them. My husband is a master at this, and the kids love brainstorming over the scariest carvings. The kids' favorite part is the mess that comes with cleaning out the pumpkins, and with that comes the pumpkin seeds and roasting them to perfection in the oven.

Depending on where we are, we will trick or treat sometimes in the country or in New York City. I prefer being in the small town, walking through neighbor-hoods in the dark.  Especially when the kids were small, it was so much fun for them. New York tends to be over the top in everything and trick or treating is no exception. Some blocks literally turn into amusement parks!

The best part about Halloween is of course to come home and count candy, trade with your brother and sisters. My husband and I charge the kids “Candy-tax”…I love Reese’s cups!
